The Merchant of Venice
Third Year are currently reading William Shakespeare's 'The Merchant of Venice'. The pupils are reading the play in class and discussing the events of each scene as we progress. Pupils have been asked to keep mock 'Twitter Accounts' for two of the key characters in the play in order to provide them with concise summaries of the events of the play and their effect on the thoughts and feelings of the characters involved. Each 'tweet' should be a maximum of 140 characters long and can be written in modern English (or even slang!) in order to keep them concise.
As we progress through the play pupils have been asked to consider the character Shylock. There are times in the play when we feel sorry for him due to the way he is treated by others. There are also times when he exhibits vicious and aggressive behaviour. The pupils are analysing these situations and will be preparing their ideas for a debate on the topic: 'Shylock: Victim or Villain'. These ideas will then be used to form the basis of a Critical Essay to be written at the end of the unit.
